Week 10 Game Post

Feel free to leave your thoughts on any game you'd like in the comments.

Once again, the bye week couldn't come at a better time. Both for Tech and for watching games that don't involve Tech. The Coke Orgy tops the list of games to watch, followed by a battle of the unbeatens in Texas. The undercard is lacking, but who needs an undercard with those two games I'll be tailgating and then attending the OU-Nebraska game, so there isn't a set watch list for me this weekend. But, you do get the return of the Bourbon Rankings.

Again, with apologies to B-Street, WTCFR and Big Daddy Drew:

4 Bourbons

1. Florida vs. Georgia (Jacksonville) | 3:30 | CBS

Winner is in the driver's seat for the SEC East and could get a shot at the National Title if they win out. Georgia's celebration in last year's game is getting way too much play. The Gators are more angry they lost the game.

2. Texas at Texas Tech | 8:00 | ABC

Texas has looked invincible, but it's a night game in Lubbock. Oklahoma went down against the Red Raiders in a similar circumstance last year.

3 Bourbons

3. Wisconsin at Michigan State | Noon | ESPN

Now that Wisconsin has gotten its first Big Ten win, it's a threat to play spoiler to teams with Big Ten and January bowl aspirations. First up is Sparty, which is still riding high after knocking off Big Brother.

4. Florida State at Georgia Tech | 3:30 | ABC/ESPN

The biggest game in the ACC this week. FSU is looking to put a choke hold on the Atlantic. Georgia Tech is looking to stay alive in the Coastal. It will be fun to watch FSU's offense against GT's defense.

2 Bourbons

5. Northwestern at Minnesota | Noon | ESPN2

The two surprise teams in the Big Ten square off. Should be an interesting game.

6. Miami at Virginia | Noon | Raycom

The other big game in the ACC. A lot will be learned about both teams.

7. Oregon at Cal | 3:30 | ABC

Eh, it'll at least be fun to watch.

8. Tulsa at Arkansas | 1:00 | GamePlan

Gus Malzahn vs. Arkansas.

1 Bourbon

9. Iowa at Illinois | 3:30 | ABC/ESPN

Shonn Greene is quietly having a huge year for the Hawks. The Illini's high-powered offense seems to come and go as it pleases.

10. Clemson at Boston College | 3:30 | ESPNU

Clemson has to win to have a shot at a bowl.

11. Nebraska at Oklahoma | 8:00 | ESPN

Just imagine it's 1971.

12. Tennessee at South Carolina | 7:00 | ESPN2

Just watch the first hour until the Texas-Texas Tech game is on.

Q&A with Tech Hoops

Since it's a bye week and basketball season is fast approaching, I thought I'd get a Q&A to get readers caught up on the hoops team before the season gets underway. The Hokies open the 2008-09 campaign Nov. 14 against Gardner-Webb, the same team that opened last season by beating Kentucky in Rupp.

Tech Hoops is your best stop for Hokie basketball news and opinion. Niemo from Tech Hoops was kind enough to answer a few questions about the basketball team.

Niemo is a member of the VT Class of '98. He attended every home basketball game during his 4 years at VT and has attended 94 straight VT football home games (every game since '94). He was honored during the final basketball game of his senior year as Tech's Super Fan of basketball. The Hokie Bird make the award on behalf of Athletic Director Jim Weaver. Niemo was known to be in the front row of every home game with his familiar red afro hairdo.

Niemo currently lives in NOVA and moonlights as the Senior Writer for TechHoops.com.

Q: What does it say about the coaching abilities of Seth Greenberg that he had such a young Hokie team on the verge of the NCAA Tournament last year?

It says that Seth is a fantastic defensive coach. He is able to instill his defensive philosophy in any team of his and get them defending at a high level. That is what has allowed VT to be so successful in an offensive minded conference.

Seth is also a great motivator and does a good job of getting his team hyped for every game. I think unc is the only ACC game last season where you can say the team was flat.

Finally, Greenberg is a strong in-game coach. He is able to make adjustments based on how the game is going. How many times was VT down early last year, but found a way to come back? I think he outcoaches a lot of guys in this league.

Q: I wasn't a big AD Vassallo fan until the end of last season and into the ACC and NIT tournaments when he really impressed me with his play and leadership. Is he ready to be the leader of this team as a senior this season?

Everyone always assumes the "senior(s)" have to be the team leaders, but much like I said with Deron last year, A.D. is simply not a "leader" other than by example. He is not going to be the verbal guy who pushes everyone and challenges everyone. That is going to be Malcolm Delaney. That is a tough role for a sophomore to fill, but considering he had to do it a lot last season, Malcolm seems ready.

Q: The Hokies will miss Deron Washington and will be looking for a slasher and a shut-down defender this year. Can Terrell Bell fill both roles? I have high expectations for the sophomore.

Terrell Bell, J.T. Thompson, and Dorenzo Hudson will be battling to fill Deron's minutes, but mostly J.T. and Terrell since Dorenzo is more of a 2 (shooting guard). J.T. and Terrell bring different qualities to the table. Both are very athletic, but J.T. is the better slasher and rebounder. Terrell is more of a spot-up shooter. On defense, Terrell is similar to Deron in that he has the quickness to guard a 2 or a 3. J.T. can guard a 3 or a 4 for sure. The question will be can he guard shooting guards. If so, I think Thompson will see more minutes because someone is going to have to guard the other team's 2 while A.D. is in. A.D.'s lack of quickness means he is more suited to guards 3's.

Q: Who is going to be Tech's point guard this year?

Malcolm Delaney is still the quarterback of this team, though they wanted him to play some more 2 this year. The reason I don't think he can is I'm still not sold on Hank Thorns. I'm not sure he is ACC-caliber. But VT didn't bring in any guards in this class, so that leaves Tech with only Delaney and Thorns as guys that can run the point. Thorns is the better defender but he really brings nothing to the offensive end while Delaney is a fantastic scorer and does hustle on D. I'd expect to see Delaney in there at point about 2/3s of the time and Thorns the rest. If Hudson (and/or Bell) develops at the shooting guard spot, that could really eat into Thorns's minutes.

Q: What kind of production can we expect out of freshman Victor Davila this year?

I am sure he will see minutes but how many, I'm not sure. He has an ACC-body already. A lot will depend on how Lewis Witcher and Cheick Diakite play. Jeff Allen, Davila, Witcher, and Diakite will be the guys getting the minutes at the low post spots. Obviously, Allen will play as much as he can and stay out of foul trouble. Witcher has the inside track right now on getting the most time at the other spot, so it is up to Davila to earn minutes away from him. Personally, I think he will get a good bit of time early to show what he can do, but see his minutes dwindle once ACC play starts unless he can surpass Diakite or Witcher.

Q: What are your expectations for this team? Where will they finish in the ACC and what kind of postseason do you expect?

I started at VT in '94. I saw us win the NIT in '95, go to the 2nd Round of the NCAA in '96, and the 2nd Round of the NCAA in '07. But I think this could be the best team the Hokies have had in the last 15 years. They have talent and depth, except in terms of ballhandling. The offense has looked much better from the end of last year into the preseason this year. We know the Hokies will play tough D, but if the offense can start looking un-Stinespring-like, look out. But the teams I mentioned above were very senior-laden. This squad might be a year or two away. The problem is they don't have Vassallo past this year.

The ACC Media picked Tech to finish 6th. I think that is the lowest VT could possibly finish in conference. More likely, I think the Hokies will finish 4th. VT could finish anywhere from 3rd to 6th in the regular season and will definitely earn a NCAA Tournament bid.

Week 10 ACC Preview

Week 10
Miami at Virginia, Noon on Raycom
Clemson at BC, 3:30 p.m. on ESPNU
Duke at Wake Forest, 3:30 p.m. on ESPN360
Florida State at Georgia Tech, 3:30 p.m. on ABC/ESPN
Bye: Maryland, UNC, NC State, Virginia Tech

This is a good week for the Hokies to have off. Obviously, there's the quarterback situation. Even with the bye week, it's looking very likely that Cory Holt will be the starter against Maryland. But, at least he has extra time to get settled in under center. The other reason is it allows the ACC craziness to continue while they watch in comfort from their own dorm rooms/apartments. You can't lose if you don't play!

If you're a fan of chaos, you're rooting for Miami and Georgia Tech this weekend.

Miami (2-2) at Virginia (3-1)

If UVa wins, it's in the drivers seat in the Coastal. If Miami wins, the division is suddenly as muddied as the Atlantic.

I think this game will tell us a lot about both teams. Miami has won three in a row, but the win over Wake doesn't look as impressive as it would have a week or so ago. The Hoos have won four in a row since losing to Duke by four touchdowns, including impressive wins against UNC and GT.

Clemson (1-3) at BC (2-2)

I actually think Clemson has a shot in this one. Bad Chris Crane reared his ugly head again the Tigers had an off week to let things calm down. You knew they wouldn't beat Georgia Tech after all the turmoil. And I think Dabo adding the Tiger Walk and emphasis on togetherness did more harm than good. He should have just let the kids play the first game and then started getting things together off the field.

Clemson needs a win to have a shot at going to a bowl. The Tigers have to go 4-1 in their last five games to do so. BC needs a win to have a shot at Tampa.

Duke (1-2) at Wake Forest (2-2)

It's a similar situation to the game above. The Devils need to win if they want to go to a bowl. Wake needs a win if it wants to keep its Tampa dreams alive.

BC and Wake can't win the Atlantic this weekend, but the two teams sure as hell can lose them.

Florida State (3-1) at Georgia Tech (3-2)

The Noles are suddenly looking like the best team in the conference. Which of course means they will lose this weekend in Atlanta. Florida State needs a win to stay in control of its own destiny while Georgia Tech needs a win to stay in the Coastal race.

The Yellow Jackets are still struggling with turnovers. They looked a lot better with Jaybo Shaw at QB and maybe they should try getting him back in there. They were a lot more efficient with him. Meanwhile, the Seminoles offense is starting to look pretty potent.

Bye Week Game Post

Perfect weekend for a bye. Leave your thoughts on any game you'd like in the comments. Here are the games I'm watching. Keep in mind, I have a three TV set up in the living room. It isn't exactly Phil Steele's set up that he shows in this year's magazine, but it gets the job done.

Week 7
Noon: OU vs. Texas (ABC)
Noon: Minnesota at Illinois (ESPN)
Noon-thirty: South Carolina at Kentucky (Raycom Affiliate)
3:30: Tennessee at Georgia (CBS)
3:30: Notre Dame at North Carolina (ESPN)
3:30: Michigan State at Northwestern (ESPN2)
8:00: LSU at Florida (CBS)
8:00: Penn State at Wisconsin (ESPN)
8:00: Oklahoma State at Missouri (ESPN2)
9:30: Air Force at San Diego State (The MTN)
10:15: UCLA at Oregon (FSN)

Bye Week Viewing Guide

All games ranked on the bourbon scale (apologies to TSL's bourbonstreet and Wild Turkey CFR are in order): 4 bourbons = must watch; 3 bourbons = still great football; 2 bourbons = only if you have a rooting interest; 1 bourbon = just check the box score.

4 Bourbons

1. OU vs. Texas (Dallas)
Best game of the day, bright and early. OU's going to win by two touchdowns. How do I know? The ghost of Alfalfa Bill Murray told me. That's how.

2. LSU at Florida
I have no clue who's going to win this one, which is why I'm so giddy to watch it. I'll be rooting for Florida, though, and here's why:

3 Bourbons

3. Notre Dame at North Carolina
This game gets higher billing because I'm an ACC homer and it involves the opportunity to root against Notre Dame.

4. Penn State at Wisconsin
The Wisconsin band is back. But will it be enough to keep the Badgers from going 0-3 in the Big Ten? Probably not. I knew Wisconsin was overrated this year.

5. Oklahoma State at Missouri
If you're a fan of oodles of sweet, sweet, delicious points, this might actually be worth four bourbons to you. Plus you get to see Heisman candidate Chase Daniel(s) give me a fantasy team a victory, single-handedly.

6. Tennessee at Georgia
Tennessee's defense is good. But do you really think they're going to score more than 14 points this time around against the Dawgs?

2 Bourbons

7. Minnesota at Illinois
If the Gophers win, they're bowl eligible. Really hard to believe.

8. South Carolina at Kentucky
The Yin to the OSU-MU Yang. This one's for defensive-minded folks.

9. Air Force at San Diego State
Yes, I'm really high on Air Force this year. You get to see some hot flexbone action (that should be a porn title) against former Oklahoma OC Chuck Long.

1 Bourbon

10. Central Florida at Miami
Ugly.

11. UCLA at Oregon
I think both teams are down to their third-string quarterbacks. But it will be the only game on at midnight, so you might as well watch if you haven't passed out.

12. Purdue at Ohio State
This game is usually close.

13. The combined thrashings that will be Nebraska at Texas Tech and Colorado at Kansas
You only need to watch this if your favorite team is playing one of the teams involved next week.

14. Iowa at Indiana
Dude. Seriously. The OU-Texas game's on. Change the channel.

OU-Texas for $90

It's OU-Texas week. When I was an undergrad at the University of E.K. Gaylord, I never really bought into the hype surrounding OU-Texas week. I covered the game three years and went down without going to the game another. But my redshirt senior year was different. I felt I needed to experience OU-Texas as a fan just once. However, I also only had $100 to my name.

Screw it, we're going.

The same was true for my roommate, Canada. The reason we called him Canada is a story in and of itself. He isn't from Canada, he's from Ohio. The public school system in Oklahoma isn't very good, one thing led to another and now he's "Canada".

So Canada and I decided to head down to Dallas the Thursday before OU-Texas without tickets or a place to stay and only $200 collectively to our names. We were able to leave Thursday because OU gives its students the Friday before OU-Texas off so they can go down to Dallas early and get in the proper frame of mind before the game.

Thursday Night

We got to Dallas at around 11 p.m. and went to my favorite Dallas bar, The Flying Saucer in Addison. The Saucer was always a Thursday tradition for the group of us that went down to OU-Texas every year. Because it was my redshirt year and Canada was a year younger than me, we were the only two from the usual group in Dallas this year. The alumni of the group were slackers and didn't make the trip.

We closed down the Saucer and blew about $25 each of our bankroll. Now, to find a place to sleep at 2 a.m. on Thursday in Dallas. Fortunately for us, the Canuck knew a girl who had a thing for him who lived near Addison. We were both too hammered to drive, so we called her for a ride.

Even though she had work at 6 a.m. the next day, she drove to The Saucer, picked us up and drove us back to her place. We found out later it wasn't her place, but some house she was housesitting. In order to get out of spending the next three hours in the guest room with her, Canada and I had to share the master bedroom of these people's house.

She took the Canuck to get my car on her way to work, he came back to the house and we had the run of the place for the day. We drank their coffee, ate their food, used their thankfully heated pool and waited for other friends who were getting into town that night.

Friday night's alright for fighting

The Friday of OU-Texas is a rite of passage for students of both universities. The place to be is the West End, where copious amounts of drinking, yelling and brawling always take place. Police in riot gear and on horses are prevalent, but most of those in the West End are oblivious to them.

The police let everything go: public intox, minor in possession, even the occasional public urination ... as long as you don't get into a fight. If you get into a fight, you're history.

(Quick side story. A few years prior a friend of mine got into a fight the night before OU-Texas. He gets put into detox, along with a cell full of OU and Texas fans. They aren't going to let any of them out for 12 hours, which in my friend's case is 1 p.m. Too bad the game's at 11 a.m. He's resigned to the fact that he'll be missing this year's game.

Until the next morning when a guy in a red Armani suit wearing a red cowboy had strolled into the jail. He asked all OU fans to step to the front of the cell. He announced he was paying all of their bails, filed all of them into his stretch limo, gave them booze and a ride to the game.)

So we get to the West End at 10 p.m., get over-served at a bar and wander out into the street, which is wall-to-wall people. There's yelling, there's shoving and eventually fighting.

At this point I've lost Canada, who ran into another girl who was into him and took him back to her boyfriend's hotel room to presumably play Parcheesi and Scrabble. I run into my buddy Gabe who was in town from the Left Coast and had a table at another bar. This was clutch because Gabe chose a real major at OU and therefore makes a lot more money than I do. So when he's hammered he usually picks up my tab.

Now in the proper frame of mind, we re-entered the street where all hell had broken loose. There's cops in riot gear trying to break up a fight between two people who weren't students or fans of either school. A lot of older people will go to the West End on Friday just to watch the spectacle, but it isn't very often that they end up joining the fray.

They finally reach who they perceive to be the instigator and taze him in the groin. His reaction to being tazered in the groin spooks the police horse, which tramples him. We decided that was a sign we should leave the West End. Now, I have to find a place to stay for the night.

Gabe's hotel is a no-go. It requires wrist bands to get in and it will be impossible to get Canada and I into the hotel. So I call up my buddy Ed, who is staying in a hotel on the north side of town. We can stay there, for free. Victory. But, it's a 20 minute drive and I need to be there soon since its late, which means I have to find Canada.

Using a cell phone on the West End on Friday is an exercise in futility. I can't get a signal out, so I start walking in the general vicinity of where I think Canada went. Sure enough, I find him and the girl and neither of them are anywhere near sober. Both are stumbling and falling over, but we somehow carry the girl to the car and head to Ed's hotel.

When we got there, Ed was mad that there was more than just the two of us, meaning we'd have to cram 11 people into this hotel room instead of 10. However, both Canada and I brought air mattresses, so all was forgiven. Somehow, Canada and the girl fit onto one twin sized air mattress and I take the other. I made sure to sleep no where near those two.

I would title this section "Saturday in Fair Park" but I fucking hate Chicago.

This was the first time I'd been to Dallas for OU-Texas for a game that wasn't at 11 a.m. That, thankfully, allowed us to sleep in until 10, because if you aren't on the road by 11, you aren't going to get to the game until right at kick or later. Traffic is that bad.

I dropped the girl off at one of her friend's hotel and me and the Canuck headed to Fair Park, where the Cotton Bowl is located. I hate going to OU-Texas. I absolutely hate it and Fair Park is why. It's in a bad area of Dallas, there's not enough parking and you have to park on somebody's lawn. Then you have to walk through the bad area of Dallas to the gate to the fair.

If you have an OU-Texas ticket, you get into the fair for free. If you don't, like me, you have to pay the outrageous price of admission to the fair. And once you enter, you have to pay the outrageous coupon (or as Ron White says, coopin) prices to buy outrageously coopin priced beer.

[rant]

Most OU and Texas fans want the game to stay at the Cotton Bowl because they love the idea of the old building with one toilet per 10,000 fans, cramped concourses and dumpy seating to continue to host one of the more important football games of the season.

Me? I say move it to Jerry World as soon as humanly possible.

They also love the idea of the fair, the Super Midway, the funnel cakes and the rides.

Well, I'm a former carny. I hate fair food, fair games and fair rides.

Get the game to Jerry World as soon as possible and I will be a lot happier playing cornhole, grilling and tailgating under a tent in a huge parking lot than I ever would be at the Texas State Fair. Big Tex can go fuck himself.

[/rant]

But that's getting off the story. Canada and I now had just enough money for gas to get home. Canada already has a ticket because he ponied up for season tickets before the season started. Me? I went to 10 college football games that year, one of which was in the state of Oklahoma. I had to find a ticket.

I knew I was going to have to wait until after kickoff to afford a ticket. So I found my dad, took the rest of his coupons off his hands and waited in the air conditioned beer tent until the time was right.

I know I can sit with my dad once I get into the stadium so it doesn't matter where the ticket is. With seven minutes to go in the first quarter, I got into the OU-Texas game for $10.

After the game, an OU loss, we hung around the fair for a few hours to wait for traffic to die down. I still had a good amount of coupons from my dad, so I used those entertainment until it was time to go. Entertainment, of course, meant futile efforts to win stuffed animals by knocking down milk jugs with a softball. This was followed immediately by futile efforts to catapult a rubber frog onto a flimsy lilly pad in a tank of water.

Last temptation of Canada

Once back in the car, we realized quickly that it was on its last leg. We noticed on the ride down that something was wrong with my car, but it was painfully obvious on the way north on I-35. There was a weird, mold-like smell coming out of the A/C and something just wasn't right. I originally blamed Canada for the smell, saying he had left a wet towel in the car.

We stopped at Humperdink's in Addison, which was the tradition after the OU-Texas game for a final beer and dinner. When we got back to the parking lot, we found the car wouldn't start.

We got the car jumped and started back north. We knew we couldn't afford to turn the car off, so we filled it up with the car running at a Race Trac in Denton. Canada then went in to get coffee to make sure we made it back to Norman.

He returned to the car with fantastic news. In the five minutes he was inside, he met two girls and one of the girl's moms. They were OU students/fans who wanted to take us to a nearby bar and then have us spend the night at the mom's house.

Now we had a dilemma. If we went with the girls, we might never get back to Norman because of the car. After about a 30 second pause, we realized we had enough adventure for one weekend and went back to Norman with $10 in each of our pockets.

The next day I found out the head gaskets on my car were shot and I needed a new battery. The smell? Well, that was the result of coolant leaking onto the engine, evaporating and then coming through the vents into the car.

We should have asphyxiated and died.

Epilogue

This year I won't be going to OU-Texas. For years, I cursed the Cotton Bowl, Fair Park, 11 a.m. kickoffs and vowed, "that's it, I'm never coming back, this is the last time," only to return the next season. Finally, last year I broke the streak. Despite living in Dallas, I skipped OU-Texas and drove to Clemson to see the Hokies.

Some friends, including Canada, had the run of my apartment while I was gone. I returned from South Carolina to find all my food eaten and all my beer imbibed. I expected nothing less.

That's one reason I'm not going. I no longer feel the need to go back every year. Another reason is financial. Although I've proved I can do OU-Texas for cheap, I've got a flight to Boston coming up for the Oct. 18 game, a drive to Tallahassee the following week and drives to Blacksburg for games Nov. 6 and 29. I think I'll save my money for those trips.

But the main reason I'm not going to OU-Texas this is simple. How in the hell could I possibly top the year the Canuck and I did it for $90?
