ESPHeather Interviews Ryan Williams

Heather Dinich at ESPN's ACC blog threw a bunch of softball questions at Ryan Williams and then posted his answers. Williams said all the right things: The coaches know best with regards to the redshirt, he and Darren Evans get along, blah, blah, blah.

Williams did say this, though, which has me giddy:

"Right now, I have the starting punt return job, so I'll be on the field as far as punt return, but I've been saying little things to the coaches here and there about playing me at wide receiver, and I don't know if you noticed or paid attention to the Wild Turkey package with [tight end Greg] Boone. [...] Yeah, I want to get into that. I just want to be used for everything. I want to be the most dangerous person on the field at all times."

Hopefully this means he'll be a Percy Harvin-type player for the Hokies next year, getting the ball anyway we can get it to him. And with a power run game to back it up with Darren Evans, I'm starting to drink the Kool Aid believe when it comes to our offense next season.

Orange Bowl Game Post

Happy New Year, Hokie fans! The Hokies are in the last game to kick off today, so you have plenty of time to get in the correct frame of mind before the Hokies go after their first BCS bowl win. While you're watching the New Years' bowl smorgasbord, don't forget that the Winter Classic is on NBC this afternoon as well. Yes, Ringer and Moreno will rock your face off today, but there aren't many things better than outdoor hockey. Especially when two Original Six teams are involved.

OK, enough hockey homerism. Go Hokies!

My 2008 ACC Awards Ballot

For whatever reason, I decided to compile the ballots from my fellow ACC bloggers to come up with our 2008 ACC football awards. The ballots should be in to me and/or posted on the various ACC blogs you know and love soon and I'll have the results by the end of the week. For now, here's my ballot for you all to dissect.

Three points for a first place vote, two for second, one for first. Pretty straight-forward.

- Easy choice.

- Irving was injured at points during the year, but was an absolute MEAST when he was on the field. Couldn't be stopped.

What to Watch vs. Maryland

Lane Stadium

- Lane better be at its fiercest. This is a national televised Thursday night game in Blacksburg. After two lackluster environments in Boston and Tallahassee, I want to experience Lane as I know and love it. As a place where dreams go to die for opposing teams. As a place where Miami had its national title hopes doused in 2003. As a place where Clemson couldn't top 100 yards rushing with Davis and Spiller in 2006. If you plan on giving up if things don't go right for Holt or Glennon and the offense early, don't show up. But if you're going to try and will Virginia Tech to a much-needed win, feel free to join me at Lane on Saturday.

UPDATE: CGB agrees with my sentiment.

Offense

- It will be the movable object against the penetrable force when the Hokies have the ball. Virginia Tech has the worst offense in the ACC, averaging 280.0 YPG, while Maryland's D is No. 11 in the ACC, giving up 365.6 YPG.

- Whether it's Cory Holt or Sean Glennon at quarterback (my money's on Holt), the Hokies will stick to their run-first mentality. Probably more so than before. It will be up the offensive line, which isn't bad at run blocking, to open holes for Evans and Oglesby. The Hokies are No. 4 in the ACC in yards per game on the ground, averaging 160.0 yards per game. However, the Hokies get those yards by grinding it out. Only GT has more carries per game than Tech's 43.6 in the ACC.

- Maryland's defense gives up slightly more than what the Hokies average per carry. The Terps give up 3.7 yards per carry while the Hokies average 3.6.

- I don't think the Terps are as good on defense as they have been in years past, especially on the defensive line. Their best defensive player, Will Linebacker Dave Philistin, is questionable for the game with a shoulder injury. I like our offense's chances of moving the ball.

- Holt may not be as good a passer as Glennon, but he's a capable passer and is at least Tyrod's equal through the air. What I liked about Holt was he made his decisions, made them quickly and got rid of the ball. He took one sack, but for the most part was confident in the pocket and moved to either improve his throwing lane or escape a collapsing pocket. I think he'll be fine.

Defense

- The Terps will also look to run when they have the ball. They have two capable running backs, with the best being Da'Rel Scott. Not surprisingly, Scott has done much better in the Terps wins than in their losses. He averages 111.8 yards in Maryland's wins and 79.5 yards in its losses. Maryland loses when you force them to pass early and often. In its five wins, Scott averages almost 22 carries per game. In the two losses, he had 22 total carries.

- However, Scott is slowed by a sore shoulder and is questionable for Thursday's game. My guess is he plays, but not much. He'll probably get about five carries to see how the shoulder feels. That's not good for the Terps because Scott currently leads the ACC in yards per game at 102.6. He's eighth in the conference with 5.5 yards per carry.

- Freshman Davin Meggett was solid against NC State's porous defense a week and a half ago. Meggett is the son of former New England Patriot Dave Meggett. He came in for Scott late in the game against NC State and had a 31-yard reception that set up the game winning field goal.

- Meggett has the pedigree, but is untested. He has averaged 6.3 carries per game and has not carried the ball more than 13 times in a game. While the Hokie defense has not been as good this year as in the past, there is still a big difference between running against NC State and Delaware and running against Virginia Tech.

- While I would consider the Terps a run-first team, they are a very good passing team. Chris Turner has the Terps playing much better since he took over for Jordan Steffy. He has an experience O-line and plenty of targets to throw to.

- Turner, unlike Crane and Ponder, is not a threat to run and doesn't have good enough speed to avoid our defensive ends. The difference is I think Maryland's O-line is better than BC and FSU's. The results will be there for the defensive line if they can get pressure.

- The combination of the two wide receivers (Darrius Heyward-Bey and Danny Oquendo) and the tight end (Dan Gronkowski) is the best in the ACC, in my opinion. Maryland is No. 3 in the ACC in yards per attempt with 7.2. This is a problem for the Hokies, since they are D.A.L. in the ACC, giving up 7.7 YPA.

- I hope this doesn't turn into a replay of the BC game, where the Hokies are able to stop the run and do well against the pass for the most part, but are susceptible to big plays through the air. Deep field communication between Kam and Dorian Porch is going to be incredibly important Thursday.

Outcome

- For whatever reason, I am infinitely confident about Tech's chances on Thursday. It's the exact opposite feeling I had going into the Florida State game. I can't point to a tangible reason why I think we win this game going away, it's just the feeling I have. I think being back at home for a night game in The Burg will re-energize this team. I believe blindly in Cory Holt's ability to manage this offense and do enough to give the Hokies the win. I like Holt and hope this is his chance to do something he can be remembered for at Tech.

Why Clemson won't win the ACC in '08:

1. The Tigers have a tendency to wear purple-on-purple. It doesn't look good, guys.
2. Tommy Bowden has not won a significant game in his tenure at Clemson.
3. Their offensive line could follow the lead of the 2007 VT offensive line and be all kinds of terrible.
4. Clemson women like the wear overalls. Attention women of Clemson: Orange overalls are not a good look.
5. QB's name is Cullen. You don't win titles with QBs named Cullen.

We're going to have something new starting Tuesday here at Gobbler Country. I'm not going to give an in-depth breakdown of each team's strengths and weaknesses.

Instead, you'll get quick reasons why the ACC teams that aren't Virginia Tech are colossal failures that won't win the league title this season. It won't be a complete hate-fest. I'll give every ACC team One Redeeming Value.

We'll start Tuesday with Clemson. Hope you enjoy.

2008 No. 2 - Football Wins ACC

We're counting down the Top 10 moments in Virginia Tech sports from the 2007-08 season. The moments are judged on level of pride it brought to Hokie Nation, how great the accomplishment was and how much attention it brought the Hokies.

Less than 2 months away...

Today is July 1. Meaning we're about a month away from the start of fall practice and less than two months away from real, actual, sweaty, pants-pleasing football. FOOTBAWL!!! CALLLLLLLAGGGE FOOTBAWL! Hang on, let me calm down...

OK, back to CALLLAGE FOOTBAWL. This is going to be the greatest CALLLAGE FOOTBAWL season of all time. Here's why: Unlike previous years where you had maybe one great team and a bunch of really good teams, this year there are a bunch of great teams. You could name 10 teams and still miss this year's national champion.

You've got the front-runners like Georgia, Ohio State, Oklahoma, USC and Florida who have loads of talent tons of tradition. You have upstarts like West Virginia, Texas Tech and Arizona State who have narrowed one large chasms of talent and depth and are on the cusp of breaking through with a national championship.

You have teams like BYU and Utah, who have legitimate shots at going unbeaten and maybe having an argument to play for a national title.

And the list continues: Clemson, Mizzou, Auburn and Texas all of shots at running the table for a national championship. I think this year there will be a glut of teams with legitimate claims to a spot in the BCS title game.

I don't know if a playoff would solve college football's ills. It's ridiculous that the sport with the best regular season has the most ludicrous postseason. But it might be a Catch-22. That playoff might ruin the regular season. We may never know.

But instead, we keep arguing about it to get us through to August 30 when the season begins for most teams. It's what makes our sport the best around. The Red Sox may get me through to August 30, but after that they won't get a whole lot of attention from me until the postseason.

It's because baseball's regular season is like Groundhog Day. Everyday is the same, especially for those involved in it. In CALLLAGE FOOTBAWL, every game is a must-win. If Jon Lester has a bad outing, oh well, he goes again in five days. If Sean Glennon has a bad day, we should bench his ass and put in Tyrod. Unless Tyrod has a bad day in which case we should bench his ass and put in Glennon.



Because every game your national title hopes are on the line.

And by the way: Tampa Bay, you nouveau riches pigs, today is July 1. Not September 1. Not October 1. July 1. When (if?) everyone gets healthy, you'll be back where you belong. Looking up at the word "BOSTON" in the standings.

Tech had its bubble burst by the NCAA Selection Committee Sunday, relegating the Hokies to the NIT (which might as well stand for Not Invited Tournament). Tech is the No. 1 seed in their region of the NIT and will face Morgan State at 7 p.m. Wednesday in Blacksburg. The winner of that game will face the winner of VCU and UAB. That game also takes place at 7 p.m. Wednesday in Richmond. Tech will not have to leave Cassell Coliseum on its road to New York.

Before the venting, let's take an opportunity to step back and consider the season and the job Coach Greenberg and the rest of the staff did this season. The Hokies were picked to finish 10th in the ACC in the preseason. And early on, that appeared to be spot-on. My first Virginia Tech basketball game was the season opener against Elon and the Hokies looked awful. Their half-court offense was pathetic. AD Vassallo was lazy without the ball and was therefore useless.

The one bright spot was Jeff Allen. Against Elon, he showed that he was capable into turning into a stud. He did that over the course of the season. Another freshman, Malcolm Delaney, slowly developed into a solid point guard. Early on, it appeared Hank Thorns was the man tabbed to be the point of the future, but I felt he struggled. Delaney became the point and Thorns became a good sixth man.

A team that looked like it was on its way to an abysmal season that may have led to no postseason was probably the last team out of the NCAA Tournament. Coach Greenberg was playing with house money this year. Nothing was expected of this team and he turned them into a team that went blow for blow with the best team in the country in the ACC Tournament.

It doesn't make it less disappointing that we didn't get in, though. First, the buzzer-beater loss to UNC, then Georgia's miracle run through the SEC Tournament likely moved the Hokies out of the field and into the NIT.

It shouldn't have come to that, though. The Hokies should have closed the deal against Clemson and UNC and taken it out of the hands of the committee. But two come-from-ahead losses put them out of the Big Dance. Tech didn't have a signature win and didn't play anyone good in the non-conference schedule. The Hokies lost to Butler and Gonzaga in Alaska, but other than that didn't face anyone sexy. Villanova and Arizona did, putting them in The Tournament. But there are several reasons the Hokies should have made it. They played in the best league in the country, a league that got only three at-large teams in The Tournament.

The Big 12 was horrible beyond horrible this year and got five at-large teams in. Baylor and Texas A&M? Please. The SEC was weak and yet they got four at-large bids. Don't get me started on Kentucky. What a horrible, horrible team. All of their quality wins came in conference. They sported the same resume Tech did. Bad non-conference losses, young team that gelled late, got blown out by 41 points on the road. It's a travesty they're in the field.

Then there's the Big East. Yeah, its good, but its not that good. Half the damn teams got in, including boringly average Villanova. Like Tech, they lost to NC State, who might have been the worst team I saw all season. They also lost at Rutgers, Cincinnati and DePaul. That's terrible. Their big non-conference win was over George Mason. Their wins over UConn and Pitt got them in.

And the Pac 10? What a joke. Other than Luc-Richard Mbah a Moute and the Lopez brothers, its not a great league. Kevin Love doesn't impress me. Mayo is a good player, but USC is mediocre. Then there's Oregon, Arizona and Arizona State. Lame, lamer, lamest. Oregon won on the road against K-State (yawn) and that probably got them in. Arizona beat Texas A&M at home (yawn), which probably got them in. But they went 8-10 in the regular season against the Pac 10 and lost in the quarterfinals of the conference tournament.

Oh, and the A10 got three teams in.

The Hokies won 10 games against ACC foes, including one in the ACC Tournament against an NCAA Tournament team. Put them in the field.

The good news is two-fold. First, Tech has another game to play. I didn't expect them to make the postseason this year, so bring on the NIT. Also, the future looks bright for a team that has had a top four finish in the best league in America three of the last four seasons.

Allen and Delaney will be great players. Vassallo turned into a leader late in the season and showed a fire I wasn't used to seeing from him. He has completely changed my perception of him in the last month.

The key will be finding players that can fill the role of stopper on defense and slashing, athletic playmaker on offense that will be left vacant by the loss of Deron. Hopefully that will be Terrell Bell, who has been touted for his defense and has the lanky Deron body type.

I've been a basketball fan for years now and it's fun to actually have my team playing well. I haven't had a college basketball team to root for, so the Hokies' hoop success is a welcome surprise.

Hopefully Coach Greenberg will stick around and keep improving the program like he has been doing.

Your Selection Sunday Theme

On this bubblicious Selection Sunday, we are the Kings of Wishful Thinking.



I agree with Coach Greenberg. Anyone who thinks Tech shouldn't be in The Tournament is completely insane. It doesn't mean we won't get left out, though. The Hokies need wins from Wisconsin and Arkansas on Sunday to have a chance. Even with wins by both teams, it will still be close. At this point, I think Tech will either be the last team in or the last team out.

But, if the committee is going to take Kentucky, which everyone thinks is a lock, then they better put the Hokies in as well. The two teams have basically the same resume. Tech has one more win (19) than Kentucky (18). Both teams are young, struggled early and came together late in the year. Both teams have bad non-conference losses, however, none of Tech's came at home. The Hokies lost to Penn State, Richmond and Old Dominion on the road. Neither team has a signature win.

Kentucky lost to Gardner-Webb and San Diego at home and UAB in Louisville. They won 12 conference games, but there's no comparing the SEC to the ACC. The SEC was horrible this year. Tennessee is a great team and Vandy is good at times, but other than that, its an awful league.

And Kentucky will be without its best player, Patrick Patterson, for The Tournament. The committee has said in the past it considers which teams are at full strength and which have injury concerns going into the selection and seeding process.

The Wildcats also lost to a terrible Georgia team in its first conference tournament game. Tech won a game in its conference tournament against a solid Miami team that is a lock for The Tournament.

So, considering all that, how is Kentucky in the field and Tech on the bubble? Its ridiculous. The Hokies should be in the Big Dance. They play in the best league in the nation, where every road game is a tough one. They just matched the best team in the nation, punch for punch, on a neutral floor. They are playing their best basketball of the season and everyone is healthy. They are deserving of a bid.

So, we spend the day rooting for the Hogs and Badgers and waiting for the selection show. It's going to be a long, suspense-filled day. But, we remain hopeful the committee will do the right thing and we'll see our name in one of those slots.
