Our top moment(s) from the 2007-08 sports seasons at Virginia Tech are the first football game of the year vs. East Carolina and the Hokies-Yankees baseball exhibition. I know its cheating to combine these moments, but so be it.
The ECU game was cathartic. It was a way for Hokie fans to complete the grieving process and come together as Hokie Nation. The Yankees game was an excellent way to honor the victims.

Tincher's no-hitter made headlines across the country and was possibly the most unique and greatest accomplishment by a Virginia Tech athlete in the history of the athletics department.
Virginia Tech will always be a football school, but from the time of Tincher's no-hitter to the appearance in the WCWS, the fans of the program caught softball fever (which sounds like a terrible, terrible ailment without proper context).

As the reigning British Amateur champion, junior golfer Drew Weaver was able to participate in the 2008 Masters. The event was viewed by millions around the world on ESPN and CBS.
Weaver was shown prominently the first two days of the telecast, being interviewed in Butler Cabin and featured by ESPN on SportsCenter and during the telecast in the following piece:
Weaver also wrote a diary for the official Masters Web site while staying in the fabled crow's nest. All amateurs playing The Masters are allowed to stay in the cramped space while participating.
Weaver's stay was short, however. He missed the cut as he fired a 76 on Thursday and an 80 on Friday.

A great season for the Virginia Tech softball team culminated with a trip to the sport's grandest stage: The Women's College World Series in Oklahoma City.
Unfortunately, the Hokies lost both games in OKC. However, it was a wonderful ride to the World Series. Dramatic home runs gave the Hokies a regional win in Knoxville and outstanding pitching from Angela Tincher gave them a super-regional win in Ann Arbor.
Tincher pitched valiantly in the World Series, but the bats fell silent and Tech was shutout in both games.

Football belongs to the Hokies, hoops belongs to the Wahoos. Or so we thought. No, instead the Hokies swept UVa in 2008, including Tech's first win in Charlottesville since 1968.
The win in C'ville came in style, too. Deron Washington hit this shot as time expired:
The game in Blacksburg was another thriller. The Hokies won 72-65 in OT.

Virginia Tech's men's soccer team went 14-4-5, advanced to the Final Four of the 2008 College Cup and finished the year ranked No. 4 in the nation. The Hokies lost in the Final Four, 2-0, against eventual national champion Wake Forest on ESPN2.
Tech finished fourth in the powerful ACC in 2008 and laid the foundation for a bright future for the program. After dropping their season opener against VCU, the Hokies went 14 matches without suffering a defeat. They beat five ranked teams during the season, including No. 2 UConn in the quarterfinals.
Hokie all-American forward Patrick Nyarko was drafted in the first round of the MLS SuperDraft by the Chicago Fire, the greatest team in the history of soccer.

The Virginia Tech Women's Track and Field team coasted to its second consecutive ACC Championship in mid-April and in late May captured its second consecutive East Regional championship.
Injuries kept the Hokies from making noise at the NCAA Championships in Des Moines, Iowa, but did not take away from their great season. Record-setting sophomore Queen Harrison (pictured) won both the 100 and 400m hurdles at the regional in Tallahassee.
She suffered a left hamstring injury at the NCAA meet and may have to miss Olympic qualifying beginning June 27 in Eugene, Ore. However, she was named Southeast Region track performer of the year and director of track and field Dave Cianelli was named region and ACC coach of the year.

Virginia Tech had eight players selected in the 2008 NFL Draft, the second-most for any school behind USC. It spoke to the level of athlete Virginia Tech has and how well the coaching staff prepares its players for the NFL.
The Hokies had one first-round selection in 2008. Offensive tackle Duane Brown was the 26th overall pick by the Houston Texans. In the second round, cornerback Brandon Flowers was taken by Kansas City and wide receiver Eddie Royal was taken by Denver.
Brown was the seventh player in Virginia Tech history to go in the first round of the draft, the sixth under Coach Beamer.
