Virginia Tech missed out on quarterback prospect Kevin Newsome, who signed with Penn State. Many Hokie fans were furious that Tech wasn't able to sign Newsome, who had indicated he wanted to come to Blacksburg.
However, there is at least one person who isn't sold on Newsome's quarterbacking skills. ESPN's Tom Luginbill mentions this in his list of schools with top incoming talent that will participate in spring practice.
He lists Penn State and talks specifically about Newsome. Because the column is pay material, I can't give you a direct quote. Basically he said Newsome needs a lot of work if he's going to play quarterback at the college level and that he would be better suited at linebacker or safety.
Newsome's a great talent, but I think Hokie fans may have overreacted over him not picking Virginia Tech. There are few guys who are can't miss guys and at least according to Luginbill, Newsome isn't one of them.
Recruiting as a science is as exact as meteorology. Getting worked up over whether or not an 18 year old chooses your school is futile. For everyone who says he's the next Michael Vick there's at least one person who says he's overrated and will never contribute. Newsome's probably somewhere in the middle.

KN is a bigger, faster stronger version of Bryan Randall. No one i knew, with any credibility thought he was MV. he has work to do, as did BR, who would have benefitted from a redshirt year.
PSU has already gotten 1 verbal from a 10 qb prospect with another on the hook. he may not last long at qb there.
i have heard he has been homesick the first 2 months, though that will likely change.
I agree with Luginbill's assessment (though I rarely do). As I've said before, the real miss in this class for the Hokies was Bryn Renner. THAT kid was the real deal superstar. I also heard good things about Tahj Boyd but I never saw him play so I won't say for sure, but I have a strong feeling that Renner will be better than either Boyd or Newsome at the next level, unless Coach Davis doesn't give him a fair shot at the 2-deep and he ends up playing baseball for a season and then entering the bigs as a baseball player.
Wait.. so you are telling me that spending an inordinate amount of time on what highschoolers (who we have never met) are choosing to do with their lives is a bad thing?
@Dane
It's a bad thing unless they're female, hot and you can prove they're 18. That's why I looooove high school girls. I keep getting older they stay the same age. Alright, alright, alright.
